Rooted in Creative Science
The Tetiaroa Conservation & Sustainable Use Plan provides the rationale for the science programs supported by Tetiaroa Society, especially the Tetiaroa Observatory and Tetiaroa IDEA and a number of Creative Science Programs.
Tetiaroa Observatory will provide the secure infrastructure and long-term datasets needed to assess the effectiveness of management actions, underpin basic scientific research on the atoll, and provide an important reference point for the international global change research community. The observatory will monitor processes underlying sectorial issues prioritized by the UN: Water, Energy, Health, Food, and Biodiversity.
Tetiaroa Island Digital Ecosystem Avatar (IDEA)
Tetiaroa Island Digital Ecosystem Avatar (IDEA) is a place-based data science infrastructure and computational platform for scenario-based planning. The Tetiaroa IDEA will model the complex feedbacks between climate change, management actions, public policy, and ecosystem services across the island’s coupled marine-terrestrial landscape. For researchers, it will highlight data needs and help generate hypotheses. For decision makers, it will simulate the outcomes of different management actions under likely environmental scenarios. It is a collaboration with the international IDEA Consortium and Moorea IDEA.
Creative Science Programs
Tetiaroa Conservation Program
Our conservation efforts encompass monitoring, preservation, and restoration programs related to the marine and terrestrial biodiversity of tropical islands, as well as the preservation of their cultural heritage.
Lagoon Fish & Crustacean Replenishment
The present project aims to replenish the Tetiaroa lagoon by rearing and releasing fish and crustaceans caught at post-larval stage. The marine post-larvae will be caught using nets set up on the reef at Tetiaroa. The implementation of this project is part of a sustainable resource management approach supported by Tetiaroa Society.
Mosquito Population Control
Tetiaroa Society is supporting a project led by Institut Louis Malardé (Dr. Hervé Bossin) that explores innovative, more effective and environmentally safer methods for controlling mosquito populations.
Archeological Mapping & Restoration Program
Tetiaroa occupies a very special place in Tahitian culture and history. Tetiaroa Society continues the inventory of archeological sites on the atoll, started by Professor Sinoto, and provides the opportunity for field training programs in archeological techniques.
Bird & Green Turtle Sanctuary
Tetiaroa Society has established a bird and green turtle sanctuary on the atoll, where birds are safe from prey, and where green turtles have safe nesting area, even if poaching is still a threat Tetiaroa Society is fighting. Through this effort, and in partnership with Te Mana O Te Moana and Manu, we are monitoring the evolution of the population of birds and turtles and defining rules of conduct inside the Sanctuary.
Tetiaroa Biocode Project
The Tetiaroa Biocode Project aims to create a comprehensive inventory of all non-microbial life in a complex tropical ecosystem. The primary objective of the first expedition is to do One Cubic Foot from the Tetiaroa reef that documents all creatures inhabiting the space as a mirror or sister site to Moorea.
Ocean Acidification Program
With the rise of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, it is projected that coral growth rates in French Polynesia will be 60-80% below their pre-industrial values. Tetiaroa is ideally situated to monitor this decline in coral growth and the ocean chemistry that is driving it. The lack of development on the atoll provides pristine coral reefs on which a long-term monitoring site can be established, free from the effects of pollution, runoff, over-fishing, and commercial activities that make many tropical reef locations unsuitable for such a study.
