Taro in the maite

Maite : traditional practices for agriculture

Activity

Planting taro on the motu

The first groups of students will be involved in the construction and planting of the maite.  After the plots are established, student groups will be involved in the harvesting, replanting, and maintenance of existing plots.

Since a mixture of plant materials and sand were sifted together to make the "soil" in the traditional maite, the students should conduct investigations on different mixes which are available on the motu.  The traditional mixes and the modern mixes can be compared and tested with taro plants grown in pots.
